Winter: Basketball

Picture
Basketball came to the U.S. in the 1890s. By the 1950s basketball was a major college sport. By the 1960s, pro teams from coast to coast played before crowds of many millions annualy. The game only requires a ball and two hoops perched at a height of ten feet at the opposite ends of the court. The object of the game, very obviously is to score baskets. Each goal or "basket" is worth 2 points. However, if a basket is scored from outside the 3 point line, that is the arc shaped line outside the free throw line, then the basket is worth 3 points. Bouncing the ball continuosly and moving forward simultaneously is know as dribbling.

The first recorded baseball contest took place in 1846. Believe it or not but baseball was played in the Civil War!!! Baseball is a bat and ball sport played between two teams with nine players on each team. The goal is to score runs by hitting a thrown ball, and touching a series of four bases. The arrangement of the bases forms a dimond shape.

Fall: Football

In the beginnining football as played in the U.S. was the same as soccer. that is, the ball was round, and running with the ball was not allowed. In 1883 a scale of scoring values was first used. A safetly was worth 1 point, a touchdown 2, a goal after a touchdown is 4, and a goal from the field 5. Football teams move a ball along a field using passing, catching, running, and kicking skills in an effort to score points. Points are earned by scoring a touchdown (six points), an extra point (worth one or two points), a field goal (three points), or a safety (two points). A touchdown is scored when a player carries the ball or catches a pass over the opponent's goal line in the end zone. The team scoring the greater number of points in the allotted time wins the game.
